CPU & Motherboard Compatibility Guide

CPU & Motherboard Compatibility

One of the most common mistakes when building a PC is buying a CPU and motherboard that aren’t compatible. This guide explains exactly what to check before you buy.

Step 1 — Match the CPU Socket

The socket is the physical interface between the CPU and motherboard. If the socket doesn’t match, the CPU simply won’t fit. Current sockets to know:

  • AMD AM5 — for Ryzen 7000, 8000, and 9000 series. LGA-style (pins on motherboard).
  • AMD AM4 — for Ryzen 1000 through 5000 series. Still widely available and excellent value.
  • Intel LGA1851 — for Intel Core Ultra 200 series (Arrow Lake).
  • Intel LGA1700 — for Intel 12th, 13th, and 14th Gen Core processors.

Step 2 — Choose the Right Chipset

The chipset determines what features your motherboard supports — overclocking, PCIe lanes, USB ports, M.2 slots, and more.

AMD chipset tiers (AM5):

  • X870E — Flagship. Full PCIe 5.0, best VRM, maximum overclocking.
  • X870 — High-end. PCIe 5.0 storage, strong overclocking.
  • B650E — Mid-range enthusiast. PCIe 5.0 GPU slot, excellent value.
  • B650 — Best value for most builds. XMP/EXPO support, plenty of M.2 slots.

Intel chipset tiers (LGA1851):

  • Z890 — Flagship. Full overclocking, maximum PCIe 5.0 lanes.
  • B760 — Best value. No CPU overclocking but supports XMP RAM and modern connectivity.

Step 3 — Check BIOS Compatibility

Even if the socket matches, some older motherboards may need a BIOS update before they support newer CPUs. Check the motherboard manufacturer’s CPU support list before purchasing. Some boards ship with a BIOS flashback button, allowing you to update without a compatible CPU installed.

Step 4 — Verify RAM Type

AM5 and LGA1851 platforms use DDR5 only. AM4 and LGA1700 use DDR4 only. DDR4 and DDR5 slots are physically different and not interchangeable.

Quick Compatibility Checklist

  • ✅ CPU socket matches motherboard socket
  • ✅ Chipset supports your CPU (check manufacturer’s CPU support list)
  • ✅ BIOS version supports your CPU (update if needed)
  • ✅ RAM type matches platform (DDR4 or DDR5)
  • ✅ Motherboard form factor fits your case (ATX, mATX, ITX)
  • ✅ PSU has correct connectors for your CPU (8-pin or 4+4-pin EPS)
